Our Mission Statement:
At Plateau Jiu-Jitsu, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for all skill levels.
Our focus is on having a safe and technical academy that fosters growth and resilience on and off the mat.Â
My name is John Proud.
Owner & Coach of Plateau Jiu-Jitsu.
John Proud, a Washington native, has resided in Bonney Lake since 2008.
After nearly 15 years of training, he earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Jeff Hougland in December 2021.
With the support of his friend, mentor, and coach, Jeff, John aims to share his training and passion for Brazilian Jiujitsu with the Bonney Lake community through his gym, Plateau Jiu-Jitsu.
For John, Jiu-Jitsu is a lifelong puzzle of movement, focusing on the art and longevity of the practice.

Meet Shalise Ward
Co-Owner & Coach of Plateau Jiu-Jitsu.
Shalise Ward was awarded her purple belt by Jeff Hougland in January 2024. A native of western Washington, she has been an athlete since childhood, training in gymnastics from a young age.
Her technically strong style, combined with her gymnastics background, provides her with exceptional mobility that complements her Jiu-Jitsu technique.
Shalise's success in local competitions reflects her belief that technique, timing, and consistent training can overcome size advantages.
Actively involved in the Jiu-Jitsu community, she trains 3 to 5 times a week, competes regularly, and participates in tournaments throughout the year.
Shalise contributes to Plateau Jiu-Jitsu by teaching classes for children, adults, and women.

Our Story
Training with John and Shalise not only conditions the body but also sharpens the mind and enhances mood, while improving mobility.
Both John and Shalise embody the lifestyle of lifelong athletes and aspire to share the rewards and benefits of a healthy body and mind.
Jiu-Jitsu not only conditions the body and challenges the mind but also offers a training experience often likened to physical chess. It demands efficient movement, breathing, and strategic thinking, continuously solving puzzles of positions and techniques.
Moreover, Jiu-Jitsu provides a safe environment for combatives while prioritizing longevity in the sport.
